Korean version vs US version: are the K-beauty products on Amazon the same as in Korea?

2026-09-17 · 6 min read · written in Busan

Short answer: most of them are identical, sunscreens usually are not, and there is a third category — Korean 'medical device' creams — that cannot legally be sold as the same product in the US at all. Here is how to tell which is which, from the shelf in Korea.

1. Identical: serums, toners, essences, cleansers, masks, makeup

Korean cosmetic regulation and US regulation overlap enough that brands ship the same formula. The Anua 77% toner on Amazon is the Anua 77% toner in Olive Young Myeongdong. Differences you will see are packaging (English-first labels, sometimes a smaller size for the US) and price. If the ingredient list on the box matches the Korean one — and brands publish both — it is the same product.

2. Usually different: sunscreen

The FDA's list of approved UV filters has not materially changed since the 1990s. Korean sunscreens lean on newer filters — Uvinul A Plus, Tinosorb S/M, Mexoryl XL — that give the light, non-whitening texture people fly to Korea for. To sell in the US, brands either (a) build a separate US formula on FDA filters, or (b) sell only through retailers that ship from Asia and let the customer import. Beauty of Joseon, Round Lab, and Isntree all now have US-formula versions on US shelves. The Korean version says SPF50+ PA++++; the US version says SPF50 (no PA rating, because the FDA does not use it) and 'Broad Spectrum'. That single label difference tells you which one you are holding.

3. Cannot be the same: Korean 'medical device' creams

Look at this week's Olive Young Korea ranking: #4 is a Dongkook Pharm barrier cream classified as a medical device in Korea. That classification does not exist for a moisturizer in the US, so the product either does not come to the US or comes as a plain cosmetic with different claims. If a Korean product says '의료기기' on the box, do not expect to find it on Amazon.

4. Same product, different size

Korean promo bundles (1+1, 50 ml + refill, 10+1 masks) are Olive Young exclusives. Amazon sells the single unit. That is why our Korea shelf prices often look like half of US prices — they are per two units.

Practical rule

Buy everything except sunscreen locally. For sunscreen, decide whether you want the Korean texture (import from a Korea-shipping retailer such as YesStyle, or Olive Young Global outside the US) or the convenience (US version, next-day). Both protect you. See Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++ and Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel SPF50+ PA++++ for which retailers carry which version.
